What your partner wishes you knew.

Most partnership issues in dance aren’t really “partner problems.”

They’re expectation problems.

Each person is usually doing their best with the information they believe they’re receiving—but that information often isn’t as clear as they think.

If your partner could step out of role for a moment, here’s what they’d likely want you to understand:

They’re not trying to resist you. They’re trying to interpret you.

They’re not ignoring you. They may not have felt you yet.

They’re not “doing it wrong.” They’re often responding to something you didn’t realise you sent.

Good partnership isn’t built on assumption—it’s built on clarity.

Leaders: your partner doesn’t need more force or repetition. They need usable information delivered at the right moment, with consistency.

Followers: your partner isn’t expecting obedience. They’re looking for responsiveness, balance, and timing that matches what’s actually being led.

Both roles share the same responsibility: maintain the connection long enough for communication to travel cleanly.

When that happens, something shifts.

Less guessing. Less correction. Less frustration.

More dancing that feels shared rather than managed.

The surprising truth is this: most partners aren’t difficult.

The connection is just unclear.

What do you think your partner most misunderstands about your role?
