Are Your Feet Sabotaging Your Latin?

When dancers want to improve their Latin, they usually focus on the obvious things.

More hip action.

Stronger arm styling.

Sharper lines.

Bigger expression.

But very few ask the question that matters most:

What are my feet actually doing?

Your feet are the foundation of every Latin dance.

Before your hips can settle, before your body can rotate, before your arms can express the music, your feet have already determined the quality of the movement.

If your foot placement is inaccurate…

If you transfer only part of your weight…

If you release the standing leg too early…

Or if you rush onto the next step…

Your entire body has to compensate.

That’s when dancing starts to feel difficult.

Balance becomes inconsistent.

Turns become harder.

Your partner feels unexpected changes in pressure.

And Cuban action becomes something you try to manufacture instead of something that happens naturally.

The best Latin dancers understand that every step starts with a clear intention.

They place the foot with precision.

They use the floor instead of simply stepping onto it.

They complete each weight transfer before beginning the next movement.

The result isn’t just better feet—it’s a body that moves as one connected unit.

That’s why experienced coaches spend so much time correcting what seems like the smallest details. A slight adjustment to foot pressure or the timing of a weight transfer can transform everything above it.

Great Latin isn’t built from the hips down—it’s built from the floor up.
