Our check list for a first dance choreography

As a dance coach, choreographing a couple’s first dance is as much about psychology, logistics, and storytelling as it is about steps.

1. Understand our Couple before touching movements

Our choreography should reflect who our couple are, not what looks impressive.

Key things we assess early are

   •   Dance experience of each partner (often uneven)

   •   Comfort with touch & performance

Aisle with style

To walk down the aisle with confidence,

focus on slow, steady steps, maintain relaxed, good posture (shoulders back, chin up), hold yourbouquet low at hip level, look at your partner or ahead (not down), smile genuinely, and practice your walk in your shoes and dress to get comfortable, all while embracing the moment and breathing deeply to calm nerves

Do be afraid to ask your first dance coach for tips choreography is about the whole day not just the 90 minute dance

Planning and Choreography Tips

Many couples worry about feeling awkward during their first dance. So here’s some tips:

  • To Choreograph or Not? You need to discuss the prospect of a dance with each other. Ensure your both on the same page. Look at the pros and cons of a simple sway versus a fully choreographed routine.

  • Simple Moves for the Unsure: A coach can suggest beginner-friendly dance moves and highlight the goals you want to achieve like having fun fun, and that the dance doesn’t have to be perfect.

  • The "Surprise" Dance: Think about the idea of starting with a slow song and suddenly transitioning into a high-energy medley to get guests involved and create a memorable moment.

  • Timing is Everything: We advise couples to keep the dance to about 90 seconds or cut the song short to prevent it from feeling too long.
