What Strictly Gets Right About Ballroom Fundamentals

Despite its theatrical liberties, Strictly does reinforce several core principles of ballroom dancing.

Posture, for example, is consistently emphasised. Even beginners are coached to maintain lift through the spine and connection through the upper body. This alone introduces millions of viewers to one of ballroom’s most fundamental concepts.

Timing is another strength. While choreography may deviate, routines are almost always musically grounded. Contestants learn to phrase movement with the music—an essential skill in any dance setting.

Partnering is also handled well. The idea of lead and follow—even if simplified—is clearly demonstrated. Viewers see that dancing is not just about steps, but about connection.

Strictly may not teach technique in its purest form, but it absolutely introduces the foundations—and that’s a powerful contribution.
