Should You Have a First Dance?

Ask yourself these three questions:

1. Are you comfortable being the center of attention?

  • Yes: A first dance can be a meaningful spotlight moment.

  • Not really: You can shorten it, invite others halfway through, or skip it entirely.

👉 Tip: Even 30–60 seconds is enough to keep the symbolism without the pressure.

2. What tone do you want for your wedding?

  • Romantic & classic: Traditional slow dance works well.

  • Fun & relaxed: A playful or upbeat song, or a casual sway.

  • Intimate & low-key: Private last dance or no dance at all.

  • High-energy & modern: Choreographed or surprise routine.

There’s no “correct” version—only what matches your vibe.

3. What does dance mean to you as a couple?

  • If music or dancing is part of your relationship, a first dance can feel deeply personal.

  • If it’s not, you don’t need to manufacture meaning, presence matters more than performance.

Popular Alternatives to a Traditional First Dance

If the classic version doesn’t feel right, consider one of these:

  • Joined First Dance: Guests are invited onto the floor after a short intro.

  • Family Dance: First dance includes parents or chosen family.

  • Private Dance: Dance alone after the reception or before guests arrive.

  • No Dance, New Ritual: Replace it with a shared toast, song dedication, or moment of stillness together.

Skipping the first dance is increasingly common and completely valid.

What the First Dance Symbolizes (If You Choose to Have One)

At its core, the first dance isn’t about skill. It represents:

  • Moving forward together

  • Being witnessed and supported

  • Taking a shared breath amid a busy day

If it feels authentic, it works. If it feels performative, it’s okay to let it go.

If you want, a first dance choreographed for your wedding tell us

  • the size of your wedding

  • the overall vibe (formal, casual, cultural, modern)

  • whether you’re dance lovers or not
